ARBOR ACADEMY
Special Summer Packet Edition
Thank you for picking up this year’s summer work packet! In 2010 we focus on more than just worksheets. You’ll find that this year’s packet integrates technology, homework, community activities, checkpoints and prizes to provide your child with a well rounded ‘bridge’ between grades. Summer is a difficult time to focus on work, so we divided the schoolwork component into sections with fun checkpoints in-between. Students utilize checkpoints to ‘complete’ each section and to meet up with some school friends and families. This will also serve as fundraising for the PTO, as each location works with the school to provide a portion of any profit to the school. Below you will find a calendar of checkpoints. Within this summer packet you will find detailed information about each checkpoint. Students will turn in their packets when they attend the fourth checkpoint, and will enter the drawing for a large item (iPod, game, etc). All students need to complete their summer packets and hand them in at the final checkpoint. Assessment data shows that students lose at least ¼ of what they learned during the year over the summer. The summer work packet will help bridge the gap between June and September. Thank you for your support!
COMPUTER TO ACCESS PART 1 You will need a computer to access the websites and resources in part 1 of your summer packet. Depending on the grade level of your child- you will find usernames and passwords as well as their own Lexile reading level. These websites and internet resources/programs help to reinforce and introduce skills your child will need to keep current over the school year. Students will use Study Island (for students in grades 2-6), they may even know their username and password from working on this site in class. All scores are entered in the database and can be accessed by staff over the summer. Starfall.com (for students in grades Pre-K through 2) is a literacy resource for the younger students. The Lexile site will allow you to produce reading lists for your child at their grade level as well as locate books that interest the reader. Reading throughout the summer is an excellent way to exercise your brain! Check the Arbor Academy website under 'Parent Resources'. The resource page contains additional links and information for math and homework help. |
