ARBOR ACADEMY
2009 CHARTER SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER

Detroit, MI - This year's outstanding public charter school, educator and administrator were recognized this week during the 12th Annual Michigan Charter Schools Conference. This annual conference, held at Detroit's Cobo Center on November 2 & 3, is the largest gathering of charter school professionals in the nation, with nearly 3,000 participants.

Recipients of this year's awards, announced on Tuesday, are:

Teacher of the Year: Joanna Jozwik, Woodmont Academy, Southfield
Woodmont Academy is a K-6 school with an enrollment of 321.  The school is authorized by Bay Mills Community College and managed by Visions Education Development Consortium, LLC. According to her nominator, "Joanna Jozwik has such a way in forming a community within her classroom and with her students, a place where everyone is free to speak their mind." Other finalists for this year's award were Dannielle Birdyshaw from New Beginnings Academy in Ypsilanti and Suzanne Monaghan of Bay-Arenac Community High School in Essexville.

Administrator of the Year:  Dr. Adnan Aabed, Oakland International Academy, Detroit
Oakland International Academy serves students in grades K-12 with enrollment of 603.  The school is authorized by Saginaw Valley State University and managed by Education Management and Networks.  According to his nominator, "Dr. Aabed has brought a high quality educational choice to this neighborhood.  Students feel safe, cared about, and confident that they will graduate with the necessary skills to go onto college or the world of work after graduation."  Other finalists for this year's award were Paul Doersam, Arbor Academy in Battle Creek; Jennifer Joubert, Detroit Midtown Academy in Detroit, and Luay Shalabi, Central Academy in Ann Arbor.

School of Excellence:  Arbor Academy, Battle Creek
Arbor Academy serves 185 K-6 students.  The school is authorized by Grand Valley State University and managed by Foundation for Behavioral Resources.  Their mission is to provide a high quality general program of fundamental education in reading, mathematics, science, social studies, conduct, healthy/physical education, and art.  Other finalists for this year's award were New Branches Public School Academy in Grand Rapids and Central Academy in Ann Arbor.

"These award winners illustrate the commitment to excellence demonstrated by the state's public charter school movement, where students are closing the achievement gap and increasing academic achievement," said Dan Quisenberry, President of the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA).
